Q1 Audit: Is Your 2017 Staffing on Track?
It’s March. Are your 2017 staffing plans on track?
If your business runs like many, the strategic staffing plan you so carefully outlined in the closing days of 2016 may now find itself at the bottom of a stack of papers on your desk. It may have slipped your mind as you tackled the day-to-day challenge of keeping your business growing and your team motivated.
But the end of the first quarter is a great time to check in.
Ask the following questions:
- Where did we plan to be by now? Review your staffing plan. Where did you plan to be by the end of the first quarter of 2016? How well have you met those goals? Note where you achieved what’s on the plan and the places you haven’t (as well as any places in which you dramatically exceeded the plan’s expectations!).
- Is it working? Perhaps you planned to add several new people to your IT staff by the end of the first quarter, and they haven’t been hired yet. Take a moment to evaluate how not reaching that goal will impact your business. Or maybe you did add several new temporary resources – but are they fitting in well? Was the onboarding process smooth? Are you happy with the amount of time it took to find and choose those candidates?
- Why did we fall short (or exceed expectations)? Why didn’t you land “on target”? What has the effect been? Decide whether you need to change to meet the set goals for the rest of the year, or if the goals need to change because they aren’t matching the reality of your day-to-day work.
- Have I talked to my recruiter lately? Finally, use this time to establish contact with your recruiter. Your staffing partner can help you adjust the plan or find ways to ensure you’re meeting your goals.
